Where Tradition and the New Millennium Meet

You're Just Someone's Type!
Maximize Your Blood Donation Through the American Red Cross

You're Just The Right Type! Every type of blood is needed daily to meet patient needs. If you have a common blood type, there are many patients who need it, so it is in high demand. If you have a less common blood type, there are fewer donors available to give it, so it is in short supply.

What's The Most Needed Blood Type? It's the one that's not there for a patient!

How You Can Maximize Your Blood Donations By Type

Are You Type O?
Congratulations! You're the Universal Donor for Red Cells. In an emergency, your blood can be transfused to people with other blood types.
Please give Whole Blood! If you meet the additional eligibility requirements, we'd also love you to consider becoming a Double Red Cell donor.

Are You Type A?
Wonderful! Your blood type is best used for Platelet Donations. May we direct you toward being an Apheresis Platelet Donor.

Are You Type B?
Type B donors are needed for Whole Blood donations. In addition, the extra unit of red cells from eligible Type B Double Red Cell donors really helps a lot.

Are You Type AB?
Fantastic! Donors with Type AB not only have a rare blood type but also have a rare opportunity to save lives in a special way. Donors with AB blood are good as Platelet Donors and also have the Universal Blood Type for Plasma. Consider Yourself Asked to be a Plasma Apheresis donor.

No matter what your blood type, you are needed by patients every day in the New England Region. Thank you for all you do to help your community!
