Male-To-Male Sex (MSM)
Deferral Policies
The American Red Cross Blood Services follows the Food and Drug
Administration’s (FDA) guidelines on donor deferrals for men who have had
sex with other men since 1977. This deferral was
implemented in the 1980s to prevent the transmission of HIV from a
blood donor to a transfusion recipient. The FDA
Policy on Blood Donations from Men Who Have Sex with Other Men can be found HERE.
Blood donations are tested for HIV by antibody testing
and Nucleic Acid Testing since 1985 and 1998, respectively. The
American Red Cross, the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and America's
Blood Centers
have issued a Joint Statement
regarding the nature of this deferral.
