Maria's Story
Maria Tricarico, R.N.
From nurse to patient......
Blood transfusions have been something I have always taken for granted in my thirty years of nursing practice. I have administered untold units of blood and seen the benefits to my patients.
I never dreamed I would be a recipient.
It was sobering being on the "other side of the bed" and having the risks and benefits explained to me. I was very nervous and, frankly, afraid until I asked from where the blood was procured. It was told "only from the American Red Cross." At that point, I knew I was going to be okay because of the stringent screening and processing standards that I knew the Red Cross followed.
Soon, I was watching the first of several units of packed cells drip through my IV line and thought what a miracle it was that this was available, and so safe. I am so grateful to the people who donated their blood and helped me recover. Now, donating blood has new meaning for me, and even more importance than it ever has. It is quick, convenient and truly a gift of life.
