Donor Meets Recipient
A Special Moment
The following story is from Ralph Cabana, a dedicated platelet donor at the Portland Red Cross Donor Center.
"On Labor Day, I donated platelets in the morning and went to the final Sea Dogs game of the year that afternoon. With my bright lime green Coban wrap and my PLATELETS DONOR t-shirt, I was easily identifiable.
Toward the end of the game, a man came down to me and said 'Thank you for saving my life.' He went on to explain that he had received many units of platelets and they had, indeed, saved his life. He had always wondered who donated platelets and he was glad to be able to meet a donor and extend his thanks.
I gladly (and with a lump in my throat) accepted his thanks on behalf of all the platelet donors and he graciously agreed to have his picture taken with me so that we donors would have a face to remember when we're donating."
