Where Tradition and the New Millennium Meet

New Appointment System Launched In Massachusetts
We Respect Your Time

Make an apointment to donate blood!
A new, improved appointment system was launched at blood drives across Massachusetts on March 31. The new system will initially be made available at Red Cross donor centers and regularly scheduled mobiles, and will be rolled out to bloodmobiles in the near future.

All blood is precious and our hospital patients need your pint of blood just as much as ever. In an effort to make the blood donation process more efficient and thereby get you on your way more quickly, we have implemented an improved appointment management system to determine in what order donors are accepted into the donation process. This change was made in order to better honor the time commitments of those who make appointments. We will systematically take Walk-In donors between those donors with Appointments. We will always work to move everyone through the donation process as quickly as we can!

Below are the guidelines for our improved system. Donors who use the new system may be asked to participate in a random survey to obtain feedback on its success.

Donors with Appointments

  • Donors who arrive outside a 15 minute window of your scheduled time will follow the Walk-In policy. Arriving too early or too late impacts the effective flow of donors who have made an appointment in that time slot.
  • Donors who arrive within +/- 15 minutes of their scheduled time will be given a colored number after they have completed the reading material.
  • The health historians will call out the donor numbers in sequential order.
  • The health historian will post the colored numbers in the health history waiting area so donors and collection staff can monitor the donor flow process.

    Walk-In Donors

  • Donors that have come in to donate without an appointment will be given a number on white paper.
  • Each Walk-In donor will systematically be initiated into the collection process by the health historian based on the Appointment to Walk-In ratio of the drive, such as 4 Appointments for every 1 Walk-In Donor.
  • For drives that have a high number of Appointment Donors that present, your wait will most likely be longer than that for those donors with appointments.
  • We respect your time and desire to donate. We understand that if you cannot wait, please make an appointment for either later in the drive or for another drive that is convenient for you.
