These transfusion practice guidelines have been developed by the Medical Advisory Committee of the American Red Cross - New England Region Blood Services and are intended for use by physicians who transfuse blood components. These guidelines are not intended for use in children and infants. We hope these guidelines are not only clear and concise, but also comprehensive enough to address the most important aspects of transfusion therapy for adults.
These practice guidelines are not intended to serve as absolute medical indications, but rather represent the consensus views of practicing Transfusion Medicine specialists in the New England Region. They describe clinical circumstances in which blood components might be administered to patients and can be used as transfusion utilization audit criteria. Patient conditions and clinical criteria for which blood component use are usually considered reasonable, are included. Not all patients eligible for blood components by these guidelines will actually benefit from transfusion.
